Izakaya Sura is a Japanese Izakaya bar serving fantastic Japanese food, nibbles and hot plates made for sharing. Dishes include chicken karaage, yakitori, edamame, sashimi and sushi. Izakaya Sura is the only place in Madarao to have a soba (noodle) master who often performs a soba demonstration making enough noodles to feed up to 10 lucky diners. Wash your meal down with traditional beverages such as sake, highball, Chuhai, Umeshu or Calpis-a refreshing yoghurt flavour drink.
Serving Nabemono, or ‘Nabe’, a variety of Japanese hot pot dishes also known as one pot dishes. A fun place to eat with family or friends where you can cook your own stew or grill your own meal at your table. Pair dinner with a local craft beer from the Nagano region.
The Shaggy Yak is in the heart of the village of Madarao. A popular Izakaya style serving Japanese & Fusion food made for sharing with friends(think Japanese Tapas). It has a retro, fun, welcoming vibe with friendly staff. Great music for all tastes and weekly performances by some local talented musicians. Try their sticky chicken, jumbo gyoza and silken ginger tofu, you won’t be disappointed!
Known for serving mouthwatering, huge, gourmet burgers in a fun atmosphere with awesome staff. A great place to dine after an epic day on the mountain also offering some top shelf whiskey. Try the Crunchy Chikita and a Whiskey Sour.
Aki’s is in a great ski in ski out location and known for the ‘best coffee in town’ located at the beginner slope with fantastic views and atmosphere to match. A great place to re charge and enjoy lunch and load the guilt free carbs to get you through the afternoon on the powder. Aki’s serve amazing pizzas and hot donuts and good selection of beer.
Dinner at Bar Jazzy is an unforgettable experience. A small, casual bar where you will be warmly greeted by the owner who is also the order taker, chef and server. Food served is diverse including Japanese and western food. Bar Jazzy plays eclectic jazz music and has lots of jazz memorabilia on display. Prices are reasonable and advance reservation is highly recommended.

We booked through Anna O’Malley for our stay in Nozawa onsen Village in Japan. Seamless service, prompt, and pricing reasonable. The Shimataya View Hotel, was a lovely stay. Room size was large, great views, and Amazing service from Staff. Momoi and Eloisa couldn’t help enough- from dinner reservations to organising luggage to Tokyo. Property is older, though clean, well maintained. 10 min walk to slopes, 5 min walk to village centre. I recommend Mountain Watch, and this property. Photos are the view from our room.
