Discover Tohoku: Japan’s Untapped Powder Playground

If you’re dreaming of deep snow, quiet slopes, and authentic Japanese charm, it’s time to look beyond the usual suspects.

Far from the crowds of Hakuba and Niseko, Tohoku lies tucked in the north of Honshu, where heavy snow falls quietly on steaming onsens and ancient forests. This is a region shaped by winter – where “snow monsters” roam the ridgelines and face shots are part of the daily rhythm.

Why Tohoku?

In Tohoku, the snow just keeps coming. With up to 10 metres of snowfall each year, this region offers some of the deepest, driest powder in Japan. But what really sets it apart is the lack of crowds. Picture this: wide-open runs, no lift queues, and the freedom to explore without the hustle.

Then there’s the culture – 100% natural hot springs, centuries-old ryokan inns, and some of the best seafood in the country.

We have fully customisable packages to many areas in the region, which means experiencing Tohoku has never been easier.

Zao Onsen

If there’s one place that feels like stepping into a giant Japanese snow-globe, it’s Zao Onsen. This traditional ski town, nestled in Yamagata Prefecture, is famous for its juhyo – the “snow monsters.” These otherworldly ice-coated trees rise like frozen spirits along the ridgelines, transforming the landscape into something mythical.

Skiing here is just as magical. The terrain is spread out and beginner-friendly, with powder stashes hidden in the trees for those who seek them. After your laps, wander narrow streets lined with bathhouses, sip hot sake, and unwind in one of the town’s many natural onsens. Zao is the kind of place that slows you down – in the best way.

Along the way, we found deep snow, quiet onsens, and moments that felt like they belonged in a Ghibli film. Check out both editions below and start planning your own journey into Japan’s most underrated snow region.
