Winter Event Guide: What’s Happening In Niseko This Winter?

Winter is fast approaching, and Niseko is getting ready for another season packed with snowy adventures, mountain-side celebrations and plenty of good times! Beyond its world-famous powder, Niseko has a buzzing winter scene, with everything from lively après-ski parties and cultural celebrations to local events and unique mountain experiences happening across the resort.

Whether you’re planning a winter escape, returning for another season in the snow or lucky enough to be calling Niseko home, there’s no shortage of ways to fill your days (and nights!).

We’ve put together a guide to some of the best events and experiences happening around Niseko this winter, so you can plan ahead and make the most of everything the season has to offer.

Night Skiing at Niseko

Event Dates: December 12, 2026, through to March 22, 2027

Why call it a day when you can keep skiing well into the evening? Night skiing is one of Niseko’s must-do winter experiences, and with one of the largest floodlit skiing areas in Japan, there’s plenty of terrain to explore after dark! Running from December 12, 2026, through to March 22, 2027, night skiing is available across the Niseko United resorts, with operating hours generally starting from 4 PM and running until 7–8 PM, depending on the resort.

Each resort offers something a little different. Grand Hirafu is the most popular choice, with an extensive network of illuminated runs, tree skiing and powder zones. Niseko Village and Annupuri offer wide, cruisy runs and a more relaxed atmosphere, while Hanazono has long open slopes and illuminated terrain park features. Just remember that you can’t ski between the different resort areas during night operations, so you’ll need to stay within the resort where you start your session.

Whether you’re chasing extra powder turns, enjoying quieter slopes or simply want to experience Niseko under the lights, night skiing is the perfect way to make the most of your time on the mountain!

Taiko Drum Live Performance at Niseko Village

Event Dates: Tuesdays & Saturdays Throughout The Winter Season

Experience a taste of traditional Japanese culture with the Taiko Drum Live Performance at Niseko-yo Square in Niseko Village. These incredible live performances showcase the power and rhythm of traditional Japanese taiko drumming, with energetic beats and impressive displays that are well worth stopping by for.

Running throughout the winter season, performances take place on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 7:00 PM – 7:30 PM, and Thursdays from 7:30 PM – 8:00 PM. Even better, admission is completely free! It’s a great opportunity to experience a little Japanese culture during your Niseko stay and enjoy something different after a day on the slopes.

Hanazono EDGE Après DJ Sessions

Event Dates: From December Through To Late March

When it comes to après-ski in Niseko, the fun doesn’t stop when the lifts close! Head to Hanazono EDGE for its daily DJ sessions, bringing a lively party atmosphere to the mountain throughout the winter season, typically from December through to late March.

Running Sunday to Friday from around 2 PM – 6 PM, with extended sessions on Saturdays until 7 PM, expect an awesome mix of Japanese DJs and guest performers.

Pair the music with a champagne lounge experience featuring Veuve Clicquot RICH ON ICE or grab a craft beer from the EDGE Tap Bar. Whether you’re stopping by for one drink or settling in for the afternoon, Hanazono EDGE is a must-visit for your Niseko après-ski experience!

Resort Christmas Celebrations

Event Dates: 24-25 December

Celebrate Christmas in the snow with Niseko’s festive resort celebrations! Get into the holiday spirit with seasonal festivities across the resorts, including a special opportunity to meet Santa Claus and snap a few Christmas photos. Whether you’re spending the holidays with family, friends or making new memories on your winter getaway, it’s a fun way to add a little Christmas magic to your time in Niseko. Expect plenty of festive cheer and a unique white Christmas experience in the mountains!

New Year’s Eve Fireworks & Torchlight Skiing

Event Dates: 31 December

There’s no better way to welcome the New Year than celebrating in the snow! On December 31, Niseko’s resorts come alive with New Year’s Eve festivities, including spectacular fireworks displays lighting up the winter night sky. For something extra special, catch the traditional torchlight ski parade, where skiers make their way down the mountain carrying glowing torches, creating an incredible sight against the snowy slopes.

With fireworks, mountain celebrations and a magical alpine atmosphere, it’s a unique way to say goodbye to the year and welcome a new one. Grab your friends, rug up warm and get ready for a New Year’s Eve to remember in Niseko!

Rhythm Rail Jam at Niseko Grand Hirafu

Event Dates: TBD February

Get ready for an afternoon of big tricks, good tunes and serious freestyle talent! The Rhythm Rail Jam is Niseko’s biggest annual snow and jib competition, bringing together some of the best skiers and snowboarders to show off their skills on an impressive setup of rails and boxes at the Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu Freeride Park.

But it’s about much more than just the competition! This free community event attracts thousands of spectators, with live DJ sets, food trucks, pop-up bars and plenty of giveaways creating a festival-like atmosphere. The course is even designed in collaboration with the team behind Swatch Nines, with standout competitors having the chance to earn a wildcard entry to the event in Asia.

Expect plenty of action, creativity and jaw-dropping tricks as riders go head-to-head under the lights. Whether you’re into freestyle riding or just looking for a fun afternoon off the slopes, the Rhythm Rail Jam is definitely one to add to your Niseko winter bucket list!

Hanazono Lantern Festival

Event Dates: TBC

Add a little extra magic to your Niseko winter with the Hanazono Lantern Festival! Set against the beautiful snow-covered slopes of Hanazono, this special evening brings together glowing lanterns, winter fireworks and a touch of Japanese tradition.

Taking place near the Hanazono gondola station, the festivities invite visitors to decorate their own lanterns and write down a wish before joining the evening’s lantern lighting ceremony. At 7 PM, the illuminated lanterns create a beautiful display across the snowy landscape, accompanied by a spectacular fireworks show above the mountain.

Watching the festival is free, while those wanting to take part in the lantern experience can purchase one for ¥3,000 (limited to 300 lanterns). The lanterns are LED-lit, reusable and attached to retrieval strings, meaning you can take yours home as a special keepsake. Grab a hot drink or something to eat from Café Hanazono 308 or Hanazono EDGE and enjoy a truly magical winter evening

From traditional Japanese celebrations and spectacular fireworks displays to lively après-ski sessions, freestyle competitions and unique mountain experiences, there’s so much happening across Niseko throughout the winter season.

Whether you’re visiting for a week, spending the entire season in the snow or lucky enough to call Niseko home, there’s always something new to discover beyond the slopes.

So make the most of your time in the mountains, get involved in the local celebrations, explore the different resorts and experience everything that makes Niseko such a special winter destination. Here’s to another incredible season filled with fresh powder, good times and plenty of unforgettable memories. See you out there!

We booked through Anna O’Malley for our stay in Nozawa onsen Village in Japan. Seamless service, prompt, and pricing reasonable. The Shimataya View Hotel, was a lovely stay. Room size was large, great views, and Amazing service from Staff. Momoi and Eloisa couldn’t help enough- from dinner reservations to organising luggage to Tokyo. Property is older, though clean, well maintained. 10 min walk to slopes, 5 min walk to village centre. I recommend Mountain Watch, and this property. Photos are the view from our room.
