Wanaka & Mt Cook Heli Tour

6 Nights, 3 heli days and 2 freeride days P/P

August 08 - 14, 2022

Probably one of the more epic New Zealand experiences available! A trip never to forget! Riding some of the best terrain with untouched powder and the most amazing views of the NZ alps!

Start the trip in Wanaka where our guides will take you around the resort chasing the best pow available. What better way to warm up the legs for the days ahead… The mountains surrounding Wanaka feature thrilling backcountry terrain and dramatic scenery. On the heli day out of Wanaka, the runs will vary between 1500-2500 ft of skiing in sheltered basins, bowls and wide rolling mountain flanks. If avalanche conditions permit and the group is up for it, there is the opportunity to access steeper terrain, chutes and glaciers. After 5 runs on some of NZ’s best powder, you’ll be begging for more. Lucky for you this is just the beginning and more heli days await!

After Wanaka head to Mt Cook for the remaining 2 days of epic heli skiing! The Aoraki Mount Cook ranges are not only the home of New Zealand’s highest peak, but also some of the country’s most exhilarating ski and snowboard terrain. There’s a variety of high altitude terrain to explore throughout Mt Cook National Park. With 5 mountain ranges and over 1500 square kilometres of terrain it’s a classic day heli-skiing in NZ’s highest alpine playground. Mt Cook offers longer runs and higher annual snowfall plus your chance to ski amongst the seracs and glaciers.

If there is a day weather doesn’t permits us to fly, we can visit a great little club field that is somewhat of a hidden gem with gorgeous views of the turquoise lake and the surrounding mountains.

FAQ

You will be in very capable hands throughout this tour with our professional guides. Our local guide(s) have spent a lot of time riding around New Zealand so know the mountains very well and will be able to show you around all the best spots. Our guides will also be around to greet you on your arrival and be around to help you with anything you need when back at the hotel. We’ll make bookings at the best restaurants for those that want to join us for a great night out!

On the heli days we’ll have qualified guides with us who have been heli guiding for many years!

We can also add in airport transfers. If you don’t have your own skis/snowboards or just prefer to travel without, we can arrange rentals in Wanaka. And perhaps you would like to extend your stay at the resort or explore a bit more of NZ by heading to another resort for more days on the hill.
Your consultant can assist with this and recommendations.

In advance of the tour we collect information relating to guests’ skiing/boarding levels, and the type of terrain they prefer to tackle.
Since this tour is mainly focussed on riding fresh pow, we’ll aim to have a 1:5 Guide to Guest ratio for the riding days.
For the helicopter days it depends on the total weight of the helicopter but a similar ratio is suggested.

Mountain weather can be harsh and unpredictable. Early in the morning, our head guide will evaluate the snow and weather information and decide if conditions are suitable for heli-skiing to operate. We have scheduled in some weather window days to do our best and guarantee fly time. On down days we can visit nearby club fields or chase powder at the resorts.

If heavens forbid we’re not able to fly, a refund will be given if adverse weather conditions prevent flying.

The Wanaka & Mt Cook Heli Tour is open to everyone who is a strong intermediate and above skier or snowboarder. Whether you’re traveling solo, with mates or with your family. As we’ll be dependant on weather conditions the day’s schedule can change last minute. Having a good sense of adventure is advised.

All the rooming is shared with other people on the tour. We’ll have twin rooms available with separate beds. We aim to allocate rooms to guests of similar ages and genders.
Breakfast is included at every property and we included 2 dinners at the Hermitage in Mt Cook.
Wifi is also freely available.

Approximately 2-4 weeks prior to your departure you will receive detailed information on your trip which includes your travel vouchers, airline and airport transfer information (if applicable), information on the respective resort, etc. Since this year we also have our head office in Queenstown so there will always be someone around to help in case of an emergency.

Wide-body powder skis or all-mountain skis are the preferred choice for your heli-ski trip. This style of ski allows you to handle a wide range of snow conditions, faster, easier and with more stability. All of our guides use these and they’re wonderful for those wanting to go longer and harder in more advanced terrain. You don’t have to own your own powder skis – talk to us and we can recommend a variety of hire equipment retailers.

During the heli days you’ll be equipped with avalanche safety equipment, but it’s advised to bring your own backpack that can hold a probe and shovel.
